3/2 2022 ~Ukraine and Russia~

    News of Russia's invasion of Ukraine has been all over the news. Every social media platform, every news channel has been reporting the bombs and deaths of Ukrainians and continuous interviews of people who are under attack have aired. Since the start of the invasion, I have been researching why Putin was planning on invading Ukraine and what his purpose was. Many websites and news articles that explain the situation state that the expansion of NATO is a threat to Russia and how Putin values his legacy, just like precedent prime ministers, he wanted to be remembered as a somewhat politically strong figure. Up until now, I haven't talked to anyone who had the same mindset as Mr.Paterson. He talked about the history of Russia and Ukraine, and the fact that Ukraine is not the only victim, despite the invasion and other damages. It was truly eye-opening to hear a perspective so different from myself and others. Before his explanation, we were told to discuss in small groups and write on the board what we think caused the current situation. Our group came up with the reason that Russia does not want Ukraine to join NATO, but at the same time, I noticed how everybody had knowledge regarding different areas of the situation. Some talked about the weapons and how people were killed, while others talked about how Putin was as a person. Unfortunately, we only wrote one reason just like the other teams, which was strange since there should have been countless causes that had led to this situation.

    In recent news I saw on my phone, a reporter was talking about how Trump's praise of Putin was unbelievable and unacceptable. Trump has long expressed admiration for Putin and described his war strategy in Ukraine as "wonderful" and "genius." whatever his reasonings are, the majority were disappointed as seen on the news. But after this lesson, I realized there is more than one side to this war, meaning there are various perspectives. Also, many people from different countries are contributing and supporting each side of the country, and whether it is for the "good" or "bad" side, businesses are corrupting and support is needed for both economic systems.

     In small groups, we watched short clips of the “meatrix”. They unfold the truth behind factory farming and industrial agricultural practices. The meatrix included scenes of the movie matrix, and by adding humor they were able to attract a wider audience. As of right now, the clips are available in 11 languages, which does not include Japanese. As Mr.Paterson mentioned, cognition regarding current issues is low in Japan. Not only does the video explain the issues surrounding factory farming, but it also gives out information on what viewers can do. Moreover, each version of the meatrix followed the storyline of the actual movies, which I found enjoyable.        I found it interesting how Mr. Paterson referred to this class as taking the "red pill". On march 7th Tuesday, the first lesson after the new era, we learned how to use the website "Blogger". However, since the WiFi was not working, it was difficult to catch up and get to the page. Although the internet was awfully slow, i was able to use the website. This website allows us to write our reflections for every class and i think that writing reflection are important things to do, because it enables us to look back and see what we thought about a specific topic or I can see how much I changed looking back at my own reflections. Therefore, I also think that keeping a diary is also essential; however, I know how having to do something every day is hard to do it continuously but the task that mr.paterson gave us made me think that this could be a beneficial habit.

Year 4 Reflective Blog

     One business strategy I was stunned by was planned obsolescence, which is a technique that is certainly not sustainable, yet too common in contemporary society. The product is planned and designed by the manufacturers to have a limit so that consumers would come back. For example, Japanese houses are said to last around 30 years; however, it usually takes 30 years to pay back the mortgage of the property. Houses are designed to deliberately deteriorate so that people would keep buying new houses. The same goes with terminator seeds which I was completely unaware of. The DNA of the seeds is tinkered so that only one plant grows and is terminated. This strategy procedure creates a cycle so that consumers would have to come back for more.
