2/10 2022 ~Top of the Pops Jimmy Savile~

    "Top of the Pops", a British music chart television program by the BBC, was broadcasted weekly between the years 1964 and 2006. The host of the show, Jimmy Savile who was seen as an eccentric TV personality, had been sexually assaulting hundreds of people throughout his life. Surprisingly in his peak state of his career. It is sickening to think how many people he has mentally and physically damaged. According to a report from the Guardian, a female victim is believed to have told the Metropolitan police she was assaulted in Savile's campervan in a BBC car park. Nevertheless, no action took place and the police file cannot be located. Many of his other claims are unsubstatiated, which should have been disclosed when it was an ongoing situation. 

    After doing a quick search on Jimmy Savile, most of the articles did in fact delineate on his cases. There were articles that interviewed victims and the quick search became an hour long probing. I was surprised to find out that famous guests like Beyonce, the Spice Girls, and Madonna were performers on the show. Did any of these people know? Were they forced to stay quiet? countless questions crossed my mind. Jimmy Savile had another famous TV show run by the BBC called Jimm'l Fix It. Children from the public would write in to the host requesting that he "fix" things for them or make some wish come true. Knowing his background and the things he was doing during this period makes everything even more repulsive.

10/7 2021 meatrix

     In small groups, we watched short clips of the “meatrix”. They unfold the truth behind factory farming and industrial agricultural practices. The meatrix included scenes of the movie matrix, and by adding humor they were able to attract a wider audience. As of right now, the clips are available in 11 languages, which does not include Japanese. As Mr.Paterson mentioned, cognition regarding current issues is low in Japan. Not only does the video explain the issues surrounding factory farming, but it also gives out information on what viewers can do. Moreover, each version of the meatrix followed the storyline of the actual movies, which I found enjoyable.        I found it interesting how Mr. Paterson referred to this class as taking the "red pill". 5/26 2021 Steven Donziger

     Steven Donziger, a lawyer who stood up to Chevron cooperation is currently under house arrest. For the last two decades, they have been battling over an oil spill that had happened in Ecuador. It blew my mind that Chevron was purposefully ignoring the situation because they knew that the people didn't have a voice. Eventually, he won an $18 billion case against the corporation. Yet, Chevron has not paid a single penny. Donziger has a serious following among environmentalists, and his supporters claim that he is being vilified for unmasking the truth of an inconsiderate decision. On the other hand, Chevron is trying to sue Donziger for manipulating evidence and has continuously painted him as nothing short of a criminal.  In this class, we were split into three groups, each searching articles of Steven Donziger in NYT, WP, and WSJ.
