11/11 2021 The Corporation 8 ~War is a Racket~

    "The people who decide on war should be the first people who have to go to war." is what Smedley  Butler claimed in his book, War is a Racket.  600 congressmen decided on the Iraq war, yet only one person had a family member who was going to fight for the war. He strongly believes that war would disappear overnight if people who make the decision, go to war instead of the poor. Tanks, ships, and guns are destroyed in wars, and new ones are made by corporations. Furthermore, newspapers have more to report and sales go up for news companies, meaning the money goes up during this time. 

    I didn't necessarily think these corporations "like" war, but they definitely do benefit from all the ravage. The luxurious lifestyle that politicians had in the clip, made me furious after seeing all the demonstrators struggling. Something I also found interesting was the northern Scottish accent used in a commercial. According to a late 19990s survey, northern Scottish accents were said to be the most "trustable" out of all the other English accents. All the companies started using the accent for telephone services and other systems. After discussing with a few people, we came to the conclusion that Tokyo-ben may be the most trustable and fitting accent for Japanese communities.

     In small groups, we watched short clips of the “meatrix”. They unfold the truth behind factory farming and industrial agricultural practices. The meatrix included scenes of the movie matrix, and by adding humor they were able to attract a wider audience. As of right now, the clips are available in 11 languages, which does not include Japanese. As Mr.Paterson mentioned, cognition regarding current issues is low in Japan. Not only does the video explain the issues surrounding factory farming, but it also gives out information on what viewers can do. Moreover, each version of the meatrix followed the storyline of the actual movies, which I found enjoyable.        I found it interesting how Mr. Paterson referred to this class as taking the "red pill". Over the past few years, my English skills have progressed, and was also able to gain more knowledge. On march 7th Tuesday, the first lesson after the new era, we learned how to use the website "Blogger". However, since the WiFi was not working, it was difficult to catch up and get to the page. Although the internet was awfully slow, i was able to use the website. This website allows us to write our reflections for every class and i think that writing reflection are important things to do, because it enables us to look back and see what we thought about a specific topic or I can see how much I changed looking back at my own reflections. Therefore, I also think that keeping a diary is also essential; however, I know how having to do something every day is hard to do it continuously but the task that mr.paterson gave us made me think that this could be a beneficial habit.

Year 4 Reflective Blog

     One business strategy I was stunned by was planned obsolescence, which is a technique that is certainly not sustainable, yet too common in contemporary society. The product is planned and designed by the manufacturers to have a limit so that consumers would come back. For example, Japanese houses are said to last around 30 years; however, it usually takes 30 years to pay back the mortgage of the property. Houses are designed to deliberately deteriorate so that people would keep buying new houses. The same goes with terminator seeds which I was completely unaware of. The DNA of the seeds is tinkered so that only one plant grows and is terminated. This strategy procedure creates a cycle so that consumers would have to come back for more. From these examples, I was able to learn how the efficiency of marketing concentrates on profit rather than the quality of products.
