10/19 The Corporation 1 ~Corporations cannot be put in prison~

   In today's class, we watched, "The corporation" a documentary that shows the change of corporation and the reality behind gaining profit. Robert Leyes, the president and CEO Canadian council for international business mentioned how companies/businesses and corporations are akin, which is not true since corporations are there to make profits for the owners. Moreover, corporations are legally bound to put the owner's profit above anything else. One example of this was the foundation of "Dodge" the car company. Ford was originally owned by two brothers who needed enough money to start their own company. Therefore, an increase in wages for the workers and discounts for customers were turned down. 

    Corporations cannot be put in prison. Even if people are killed, workers who were involved may be arrested, but the corporation as a whole still continues. In addition, externality is also an ongoing issue. air pollution and people living in the vicinity is one example. These people have additional payments due to the smoke produced by the factories. The consequence of industrial activities varies from cleaning fees to serious health damages. It is shocking how these factories would not pay for a filter to lessen the smoke, even if they could; all because they prioritize their profit.

if sales are shared on the stock market, it becomes

cooperations are there to make profits for the owners. legally bound to put the owners profit above anything else. a company and a business. f in pursuing the profit, it takes care of the environment that is okay.

600,000 were killed to protect rights for people. 

what if the corporation kills people? cannot put the corporation in prison. although, people working for the corporation can be put into prison. 

people who live near the factories, have to pay for more money due to the dirty environment and pollututed air. if cooperations cared about the people the would build a filter to lessen the pollution. Howver since copearations have to pay for expensive filters, they would never do it. Once again putting their profits above peoples health. "let somebody else deal with that" where externality comes from.

     In small groups, we watched short clips of the “meatrix”. They unfold the truth behind factory farming and industrial agricultural practices. The meatrix included scenes of the movie matrix, and by adding humor they were able to attract a wider audience. As of right now, the clips are available in 11 languages, which does not include Japanese. As Mr.Paterson mentioned, cognition regarding current issues is low in Japan. Not only does the video explain the issues surrounding factory farming, but it also gives out information on what viewers can do. Moreover, each version of the meatrix followed the storyline of the actual movies, which I found enjoyable.        I found it interesting how Mr. Paterson referred to this class as taking the "red pill". On march 7th Tuesday, the first lesson after the new era, we learned how to use the website "Blogger". However, since the WiFi was not working, it was difficult to catch up and get to the page. Although the internet was awfully slow, i was able to use the website. This website allows us to write our reflections for every class and i think that writing reflection are important things to do, because it enables us to look back and see what we thought about a specific topic or I can see how much I changed looking back at my own reflections. Therefore, I also think that keeping a diary is also essential; however, I know how having to do something every day is hard to do it continuously but the task that mr.paterson gave us made me think that this could be a beneficial habit.

Year 4 Reflective Blog

     One business strategy I was stunned by was planned obsolescence, which is a technique that is certainly not sustainable, yet too common in contemporary society. The product is planned and designed by the manufacturers to have a limit so that consumers would come back. For example, Japanese houses are said to last around 30 years; however, it usually takes 30 years to pay back the mortgage of the property. Houses are designed to deliberately deteriorate so that people would keep buying new houses. The same goes with terminator seeds which I was completely unaware of. The DNA of the seeds is tinkered so that only one plant grows and is terminated. This strategy procedure creates a cycle so that consumers would have to come back for more. From these examples, I was able to learn how the efficiency of marketing concentrates on profit rather than the quality of products.
