5/6 2021 Flak in action

    In today’s class, we took a look at several examples of "flak in action". I found out that Phil Donahue, a famous host of his own talk show, had been fired for an inadequate reason. Donahue interviewed people from both sides of an argument, including the U.S invasion of Iraq. Since he refused to have more pro-war than anti-war guests, he was viewed as a "difficult public face for NBC in a time of war". Eventually, this led to the end of his career. Once again this shows how media, which people relish on a day-to-day basis, need more contemplation. 

    Moreover, exploring the website called "if Americans knew" which focuses on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, was very interesting. It was shocking to see how other large sources were presenting completely different statistics. I realized that historical conflicts between countries still have an effect on people nowadays, causing the media to convey the righteous side and conceal deeper information. One solution to this was to utilize sources from other nations. This way, we may be able to find details that would have never been put out in other areas.

softball questions are questions that can be answered easily (low-level questions) were asked by one journalist.  the guy was chosen because he was a representative of someone who supported bush and was able to be blackmailed.

things that they don't want people to say are things that people cant prove to be wrong.  things that right-wing people wouldn't want to be shown, many cinemas and tv talk shows didn't show the movie. 

If Americans knew- website

focuses on American media. made by American women, America is a religious country. The US is far religious in the western counties. she wanted to go to Israel to see the holy places. horrified by the fact that how American media portrayed things differently. 

AP- website

the hugely bigger number of Palestinian children killed than Israeli children. these numbers are from trustable sources. Yet, on the media, Israeli death rates are far higher. completely opposite way round: inversion of reality.

such a bias is built in the media

if you want o know the bad things the country is doing, read the other countries' media. because all the media of their own countries are corrupted and not trustworthy.

     In small groups, we watched short clips of the “meatrix”. They unfold the truth behind factory farming and industrial agricultural practices. The meatrix included scenes of the movie matrix, and by adding humor they were able to attract a wider audience. As of right now, the clips are available in 11 languages, which does not include Japanese. As Mr.Paterson mentioned, cognition regarding current issues is low in Japan. Not only does the video explain the issues surrounding factory farming, but it also gives out information on what viewers can do. Moreover, each version of the meatrix followed the storyline of the actual movies, which I found enjoyable.        I found it interesting how Mr. Paterson referred to this class as taking the "red pill". On march 7th Tuesday, the first lesson after the new era, we learned how to use the website "Blogger". However, since the WiFi was not working, it was difficult to catch up and get to the page. Although the internet was awfully slow, i was able to use the website. This website allows us to write our reflections for every class and i think that writing reflection are important things to do, because it enables us to look back and see what we thought about a specific topic or I can see how much I changed looking back at my own reflections. Therefore, I also think that keeping a diary is also essential; however, I know how having to do something every day is hard to do it continuously but the task that mr.paterson gave us made me think that this could be a beneficial habit.

Year 4 Reflective Blog

     One business strategy I was stunned by was planned obsolescence, which is a technique that is certainly not sustainable, yet too common in contemporary society. The product is planned and designed by the manufacturers to have a limit so that consumers would come back. For example, Japanese houses are said to last around 30 years; however, it usually takes 30 years to pay back the mortgage of the property. Houses are designed to deliberately deteriorate so that people would keep buying new houses. The same goes with terminator seeds which I was completely unaware of. The DNA of the seeds is tinkered so that only one plant grows and is terminated. This strategy procedure creates a cycle so that consumers would have to come back for more. From these examples, I was able to learn how the efficiency of marketing concentrates on profit rather than the quality of products.
