Paper Towns Week 3

Part two chapter: Grass 

Chapter 1-9 

    After chapter 9 finished the author named the next section "part two". This was when I realized that the book was split into three parts, each having different chapter numbers. Part one ended with just Quentin and Margo's revenge night, so perhaps the parts are split in order to separate certain events. 

    The day after Margo and Quentin sneaked out, Margo didn't come to school and the following days. I felt awful for  Quentin since he would have been excited to see Margo after that night. Days of confusion continued until Quentin realized that Margo had left a clue for him on her window. Not to mention they are neighbors; a big band poster was stuck on her window which could only be seen from Quentin's room. As soon as he realized, he called radar and Ben for help. They bribed Margos’ sister to let them into her room in order to find the clues that she had left for Quentin. Surprisingly Margo left books opened in her room where she had underlined phrases and stanzas. It seemed weird to me that she would leave such vague hints instead of telling Quentin where exactly she went. Apparently, it isn’t unusual for Margo to suddenly run away. She would leave hints for her sister to let her know where she was. Therefore it didn’t make sense why she would want Quentin to know where she was. I still have a lot of questions about the situation and relationship of the characters in this novel. The lack of information about the characters makes it arduous to connect deeply with them. Although, it is a fiction novel it seems unrealistic that Quentin finds all these clues so successfully without any major hardships. 

Two important characters were introduced in this part. Lacey Pemberton, who was the only friend of Margo that seemed to be worried about her. She offered to help the three boys. The three of them go to an abandoned shop that was left as a clue from Margo but she is nowhere to be found. At this point, the characters are starting to think Margo isn’t alive. After attending a senior party, Quentin ends up in a bathroom where he finds Lacey in the bathtub crying. They gradually bond over the tiny talks and similar problems they have in common. After this party, Quentin is obsessed with finding Margo and it is causing a halt for Quentin to prepare for his final exams. At the end of this part, Lacey, Quentin Ben, and Radar all hop on the minivan to make their way to Agloe. Agloe is a place (paper town) they had discovered that was supposedly written by Margo. As they get closer to their destination Quentin becomes more selfish, which causes the characters to have a few fights over the smallest quarrels. He often forgets that the reason he was able to decipher these codes was because of his friends. 


(*Paper towns) another term for copyright traps, or fictitious towns that mapmakers would put on maps to figure out if somebody were plagiarizing them.

     In small groups, we watched short clips of the “meatrix”. They unfold the truth behind factory farming and industrial agricultural practices. The meatrix included scenes of the movie matrix, and by adding humor they were able to attract a wider audience. As of right now, the clips are available in 11 languages, which does not include Japanese. As Mr.Paterson mentioned, cognition regarding current issues is low in Japan. Not only does the video explain the issues surrounding factory farming, but it also gives out information on what viewers can do. Moreover, each version of the meatrix followed the storyline of the actual movies, which I found enjoyable.        I found it interesting how Mr. Paterson referred to this class as taking the "red pill". Over the past few years, my English skills have progressed, and was also able to gain more knowledge. On march 7th Tuesday, the first lesson after the new era, we learned how to use the website "Blogger". However, since the WiFi was not working, it was difficult to catch up and get to the page. Although the internet was awfully slow, i was able to use the website. This website allows us to write our reflections for every class and i think that writing reflection are important things to do, because it enables us to look back and see what we thought about a specific topic or I can see how much I changed looking back at my own reflections. Therefore, I also think that keeping a diary is also essential; however, I know how having to do something every day is hard to do it continuously but the task that mr.paterson gave us made me think that this could be a beneficial habit.

Year 4 Reflective Blog

     One business strategy I was stunned by was planned obsolescence, which is a technique that is certainly not sustainable, yet too common in contemporary society. The product is planned and designed by the manufacturers to have a limit so that consumers would come back. For example, Japanese houses are said to last around 30 years; however, it usually takes 30 years to pay back the mortgage of the property. Houses are designed to deliberately deteriorate so that people would keep buying new houses. The same goes with terminator seeds which I was completely unaware of. The DNA of the seeds is tinkered so that only one plant grows and is terminated. This strategy procedure creates a cycle so that consumers would have to come back for more. From these examples, I was able to learn how the efficiency of marketing concentrates on profit rather than the quality of products.
