12/17 2020 Winter homework

In this lesson, Mr.Paterson talked about our winter homework which was to choose a book and read it over the break. Our homework is to write a blog every week and compare the difference between reading a book academically and for pleasure. I am currently still deciding on which book I am going to read, but i am planning on reading something that fits my preference.   He then talked about the things he had planned for us to do for the 3rd semester which was about fake news. 
    I found the story of Santa Claus very interesting since I would have never thought that the company of coca-cola would be the reason Santa Claus became red. I searched up the old blue/white-clothed Santa Claus and was shocked to see that I had never seen any movies or stories starring the original version. It made me realize the power of media and the control they have over our society. It influences traditional beliefs and events and not only does it alter the truth but are often mistaken as something else. We had learnt briefly about fake news last year in our Japanese class and remembered how newspaper companies, tv shows and other medias use different techniques to manipulate the audience. One of them was how we apprehend information from graphs. This is where we learned how to find the slight differences and changes that were made to emphasize certain areas.

10/7 2021 meatrix

     In small groups, we watched short clips of the “meatrix”. They unfold the truth behind factory farming and industrial agricultural practices. The meatrix included scenes of the movie matrix, and by adding humor they were able to attract a wider audience. As of right now, the clips are available in 11 languages, which does not include Japanese. As Mr.Paterson mentioned, cognition regarding current issues is low in Japan. Not only does the video explain the issues surrounding factory farming, but it also gives out information on what viewers can do. Moreover, each version of the meatrix followed the storyline of the actual movies, which I found enjoyable.        I found it interesting how Mr. Paterson referred to this class as taking the "red pill". 5/26 2021 Steven Donziger

     Steven Donziger, a lawyer who stood up to Chevron cooperation is currently under house arrest. For the last two decades, they have been battling over an oil spill that had happened in Ecuador. It blew my mind that Chevron was purposefully ignoring the situation because they knew that the people didn't have a voice. Eventually, he won an $18 billion case against the corporation. Yet, Chevron has not paid a single penny. Donziger has a serious following among environmentalists, and his supporters claim that he is being vilified for unmasking the truth of an inconsiderate decision. On the other hand, Chevron is trying to sue Donziger for manipulating evidence and has continuously painted him as nothing short of a criminal.  In this class, we were split into three groups, each searching articles of Steven Donziger in NYT, WP, and WSJ.
