Term 1 final blog post

Throughout this whole term I learned and gained knowledge about communication, presentation teamwork and many other things. I remember the first lesson I had with Mr. Paterson I was surprised about numerous things.
 For example the first thing he mentioned was that he would not be giving out papers and prints in his class and instead we would be working on computers. This made me very surprised since I hadn’t used computers in class after moving to japan. As many lessons passed I started to realize how convenient it is to not keep sorting out piles of paper. The fact that one computer can change the way we work in class and make various situations more easier had a very positive effect. Mr.paterson taught us the good points and how to make presentations that will be impressive.
 The group presentation we gave about utilizing classroom spaces allowed us to find new problems around our school that we would have probably never noticed or thought of because we don’t usually have chances to look around and think thoroughly about our environment and what we are surrounded by. The techniques he was using when presenting really made me interested on how to do it. Unfortunately our group lacked preparation and couldn’t present the way we wanted it to work out.  After presenting it enabled every one of our group members to find out our own weakness as well as what we are capable of doing. Although, we could have done better we were able to find out new things that may lead to a better presentation which would be the next presentation after the summer break. I also thought that the way we take communication and the way we prepare is one of the most important things when we work as a team. Taking as much communication as possible makes it easier for ourselves to say our opinions freely.
 Overall, I could tell that I was gaining more knowledge after every lesson, coming back home with something new that I could do. Ever though our school is not as supportive towards using technologies as a part of education i believe that learning techniques from a younger age would definitely be beneficial for the future ahead of us that is predicted to be more of a technological society.

     In small groups, we watched short clips of the “meatrix”. They unfold the truth behind factory farming and industrial agricultural practices. The meatrix included scenes of the movie matrix, and by adding humor they were able to attract a wider audience. As of right now, the clips are available in 11 languages, which does not include Japanese. As Mr.Paterson mentioned, cognition regarding current issues is low in Japan. Not only does the video explain the issues surrounding factory farming, but it also gives out information on what viewers can do. Moreover, each version of the meatrix followed the storyline of the actual movies, which I found enjoyable.        I found it interesting how Mr. Paterson referred to this class as taking the "red pill". On march 7th Tuesday, the first lesson after the new era, we learned how to use the website "Blogger". However, since the WiFi was not working, it was difficult to catch up and get to the page. Although the internet was awfully slow, i was able to use the website. This website allows us to write our reflections for every class and i think that writing reflection are important things to do, because it enables us to look back and see what we thought about a specific topic or I can see how much I changed looking back at my own reflections. Therefore, I also think that keeping a diary is also essential; however, I know how having to do something every day is hard to do it continuously but the task that mr.paterson gave us made me think that this could be a beneficial habit.

Year 4 Reflective Blog

     One business strategy I was stunned by was planned obsolescence, which is a technique that is certainly not sustainable, yet too common in contemporary society. The product is planned and designed by the manufacturers to have a limit so that consumers would come back. For example, Japanese houses are said to last around 30 years; however, it usually takes 30 years to pay back the mortgage of the property. Houses are designed to deliberately deteriorate so that people would keep buying new houses. The same goes with terminator seeds which I was completely unaware of. The DNA of the seeds is tinkered so that only one plant grows and is terminated. This strategy procedure creates a cycle so that consumers would have to come back for more.
